The Middle East is at its best when you stop trying to see all of it at once.

A note from Richard Jardin
Founder & Curator of Travel Experiences

Luxury here is contrast: city energy, desert silence, mountain air and sea — sometimes in the same trip.

The region can be spectacular on first glance, but the trips we remember are the ones that slow down after the big reveal. A mirrored building in a canyon. A tented villa that disappears into sandstone. A road that drops through the Musandam mountains toward a strip of turquoise water. A Dubai skyline that feels almost unreal from an infinity pool.

This issue is built around two stays that make the landscape the point of the journey. Banyan Tree AlUla sits in Ashar Valley among monumental sandstone formations, with villas, fire pits, stargazing and the kind of quiet that changes the pace of a trip. Six Senses Zighy Bay hides between the Musandam mountains and the Gulf of Oman, where a 4x4 descent — or a tandem paraglide arrival — makes check-in feel like an experience.

We would pair them with just enough Dubai: one or two nights for architecture, dining, shopping and the skyline, then leave the city behind before the trip starts to feel like a checklist.

Sleep Inside the Landscape

Image: Banyan Tree AlUla

AlUla is one of those places where the hotel needs to know when to disappear. Banyan Tree AlUla gets that right: tented villas sit low in Ashar Valley while the sandstone formations do the visual work.

Arrival day: land at AlUla International Airport, go straight to the resort, and resist the urge to immediately start touring. Walk the property, settle into the villa and let the first night be about the valley. The hotel is around 25 kilometers from the airport and can arrange transfers.

Day two: Hegra early, Old Town later, then back for spa time or a quiet afternoon. Day three: keep the morning slow, visit Maraya, and save sunset for the resort — ideally followed by destination dining or stargazing under Ashar Valley’s dark sky.

Our room move: a Dune One Bedroom Pool Villa for privacy, a fire pit and your own pool. The architecture is restrained enough that the desert still feels like the luxury.

Book the stars before you book another dinner.

The resort offers guided stargazing with telescopes, a fire pit and refreshments. It is exactly the kind of experience that feels unnecessary on paper and essential once you are there.

One perfect AlUla day

Hegra before the heat builds. A long lunch. Back to the villa for a reset. Maraya in late afternoon. Sunset in the valley. Dinner outside. Then turn the lights down and let the sky do the rest.

Voysera rule: the desert does not need more programming after dark.
Pack for AlUla
  • Day: linen shirt dress / relaxed trouser
  • Sun: sunglasses + structured hat
  • Walk: closed-toe shoe with grip
  • Night: long fluid dress / soft tailoring
  • Layer: lightweight knit or wrap
  • Palette: ivory, sand, rust, bronze, black
  • Luggage: structured cabin case + soft weekender
Desert-to-Dinner

The look: quiet shape, natural fabric, one strong accessory.

Think clothes that move in the heat but still look deliberate when the sun goes down. Longer lines work beautifully here — and photograph better against the landscape.

Finish the look: LOEWE Paula’s Ibiza raffia, sculptural gold jewelry and a flat leather sandal.

Luxury luggage edit: RIMOWA cabin case, Métier weekender and a slim leather document pouch for airport-to-resort ease.

What to listen to

Desert After Dark

Saint Levant · Elyanna · Bedouin · Keinemusik · RÜFÜS DU SOL · Peggy Gou · Khruangbin · Sade · The Weeknd · Fred again..

Start with regional voices, move into late-night electronic, and keep enough space for silence between tracks.

Richard’s table note

Do one destination dinner, not three elaborate nights in a row. The luxury in AlUla is the landscape — give it room.

Where the Mountains Fall Into the Sea

Image: Six Senses Zighy Bay

Zighy Bay works because the arrival already feels like you have left ordinary travel behind. From Dubai, the drive takes roughly two hours before the road climbs into the Musandam mountains and the bay suddenly appears below.

The resort sits between rugged rock and a long sweep of sand, with Omani-inspired villas built from stone and timber. Each has private outdoor space and a pool; the mood is deliberately low-key even when the experience is highly polished.

Arrival day: take the mountain route and, if you want the signature story, arrange the tandem paraglide arrival. Day two: beach, spa, and a late lunch. Day three: get on the water — a dhow-style cruise or the resort’s Dhahab boat — then return in time for sunset.

Our room move: beachfront if the sea is the point of the stay; otherwise, choose the villa category that gives you the most privacy and spend the savings on a private experience.

Reserve Sense on the Edge for the evening that matters.

Perched high above the bay, the restaurant’s current Journey of the Senses is a multi-course farm-to-table experience, with private Starlight and Moonlight tables available for a more intimate night.

One perfect Zighy Bay day

Swim before breakfast. Do almost nothing until lunch. Take the boat out in late afternoon or climb for the view. Come back, shower, dress properly, and let dinner happen above the bay.

The Musandam at sunset: the part of the trip that should not be scheduled too tightly.
Pack for Zighy Bay
  • Swim: two suits + oversized linen shirt
  • Day: loose cotton / linen separates
  • Sea: non-slip sandal + sun hat
  • Night: long dress / unstructured jacket
  • Layer: light knit for mountain dinners
  • Bag: one tote, one small evening bag
  • Luggage: hard-shell carry-on + resort tote
Sea-to-Sunset

The palette: chalk, navy, olive, tobacco, brushed gold.

Resortwear should still feel like clothing. A crisp shirt over swimwear beats a complicated cover-up, and a long evening silhouette always works against the mountains.

Style rule: keep shoulders and hemlines considered when leaving the resort; at the hotel, polished resortwear is the right register.

Luggage note: this is the part of the trip for a clean ivory or graphite suitcase, a woven beach tote and one evening pouch that does not try too hard.

Coast After Dark

Khruangbin · Sade · RÜFÜS DU SOL · Frank Ocean · Peggy Gou · Saint Levant · Elyanna · Bonobo · Jungle · Majid Jordan

Less “hotel lounge,” more road-trip-to-the-water: warm, familiar, modern, with enough rhythm for the drive back from dinner.

Brooke’s camera note

The best Zighy Bay image is not the villa. Shoot the descent, the scale of the mountains, the blue water and the tiny beach below — then the hotel makes sense.

Voysera Field Notes

Make Dubai the front door — not the whole trip.

Dubai stopover

One&Only One Za’abeel: two nights of city energy before the landscape takes over.

One&Only One Za’abeel calls itself the world’s first ultra-luxury urban resort, and the concept works especially well as a short stop: skyline rooms, destination dining and the Tapasake infinity pool high above the city.

Voysera move: land in Dubai, recover properly, reserve one serious dinner, give yourself half a day for shopping or architecture, then move on. Dubai works best in this itinerary as contrast.

AlUla arrival

Fly to ULH, then let the hotel handle the last stretch.

AlUla International Airport is about 25 kilometers from Banyan Tree AlUla. The hotel currently notes direct connections from Dubai along with domestic service from Riyadh and Jeddah, and its concierge can arrange airport transfers.

Do not: land and immediately schedule Hegra. The first evening in Ashar Valley is part of the stay.

Oman arrival

Dubai to Musandam is the scenic transfer worth keeping.

Six Senses Zighy Bay describes the resort as roughly a 120-minute drive from Dubai through the Musandam landscape. The signature arrival is by tandem paraglide from the mountain, but a 4x4 descent is dramatic enough if you prefer to keep both feet on the ground.

Border formalities and vehicle arrangements can change, so have the resort or your advisor reconfirm the exact transfer requirements before departure.

Voysera privileges

The room is only the beginning.

At participating hotels, preferred channels may include breakfast, upgrades when available, resort credits, early check-in or late check-out when available, welcome amenities and priority recognition before arrival.

We can also coordinate the things that shape this particular trip: airport transfers, border logistics, Hegra access, Maraya, destination dining, spa, a dhow-style cruise, shopping strategy in Dubai and the restaurants worth dressing for in the city.

The 9-night shape

Dubai 2 · AlUla 3 · Zighy Bay 4

Two city nights are enough to land softly. Three nights in AlUla gives you two full days without racing. Four at Zighy Bay lets the final stop actually feel like a vacation.

Add time only where the hotel changes the experience — not because another city fits on the map.

VOYSERA

The best Middle East itinerary is not a list of landmarks. It is a sequence of moods.

Voysera designs highly curated journeys around the hotels, restaurants and experiences worth traveling for — then connects the pieces: preferred hotel benefits, private transfers, difficult reservations, guides, celebrations, aviation options and the details that make a trip feel effortless.

Nothing here has to be copied exactly. We can take one hotel, one dinner, one landscape — or simply the feeling you want from the trip — and customize the journey around you.
